Can AI really attack a system?
Tuesday November 12, 2024 1:00pm - 4:00pm MST
You’ve heard about AI tools such as ChatGPT being used to write malware and other cyberattack scripts, but how effective are they really? In this interactive session, cybersecurity experts from the University of Alberta and Cybera will simulate real-world attack scenarios using AI tools. Attendees will gain relevant context into the actual threat of AI against their institution, and see how these threats are monitored and addressed through a Security Information Event Management (SIEM) system.

Geared towards the network and security leads in education and public sector institutions, this workshop will provide a valuable learning and networking opportunity. This is your chance to walk through a variety of realistic attack scenarios, and build key relationships with other experts in the field.

Wednesday November 13, 2024 9:30am - 10:30am MST
Through the lens of Brittlestar’s dry and comedic perspective as a content creator OG, we dive into the modern-day scapegoat for, and solution to, all of society's problems—technology. From social media (like how did the place where your cousin's cat memes become a battleground for global debates?) to AI-induced anxiety (why he always thanks Chat GPT), we explore why it’s so convenient (and fun) to point fingers at our tech when things go awry… when we should really be pointing at ourselves.

From Memes to Maturity: Thirty Years of Cyber Culture and the Future of Cybersecurity
Wednesday November 13, 2024 11:00am - 11:30am MST
Over the past three decades, cybersecurity has dramatically evolved, influenced by rapid technological advancements and the rise of digital culture. This journey, marked by milestones often trivialized through memes, highlights the pervasive nature of cyber threats.
This presentation explores the history of cyber culture, examining key events and trends that have shaped the cybersecurity landscape. We will delve into how memes and internet culture have influenced public perception of cyber threats, from script kiddies to ransomware and state-sponsored attacks.
Looking ahead, the next thirty years promise even more challenges as digital expansion continues. Technologies like quantum computing, AI, and IoT increase the attack surface, posing significant risks that demand innovative and resilient security solutions.
Amidst these evolving threats, data resilience emerges as the cornerstone of a robust cybersecurity strategy. Ensuring data resilience means organizations can maintain continuity, recover quickly, and protect their most valuable asset—information—regardless of a cyber attack's success.
Join us as we journey through the past, present, and future of cybersecurity, understanding the critical importance of data resilience in an ever-changing digital world.

Back to the future: what 30 years of internet innovation tells us about what’s next
Wednesday November 13, 2024 3:45pm - 4:15pm MST
What is the future of the internet of Canada?

Cyber attacks are threatening to destabilize Canadian organizations and households. Costs of protection are rising. Finding talented people who want to work in cybersecurity is as big a challenge as ever.

To examine where we are headed in the future, we first need to head in the opposite direction: the past.

The story of the internet in Canada is a long one. But it would be difficult (or perhaps impossible) to tell it without mentioning CIRA, the not-for-profit dedicated to building a trusted internet for Canadians.

In this session, CIRA’s Monica Ruttle will show participants how CIRA’s innovative contributions to the internet in Canada over the past 30 years have helped organizations across the country.

Over the last three decades, CIRA has managed the .CA domain on behalf of millions of Canadian websites, innovated on the domain name system (DNS) and developed inventive ways for Canadian organizations to fend off cybersecurity attacks.

Where will the internet go next ? Join us in this session to find out (and chuckle at some memes in the process).

What processes exist (or should exist) to protect Indigenous data and intellectual property? He will also look at perspectives and actions being taken by Indigenous communities and governments around the world, in a presentation touching on sui generis copyright and trade secret laws, digital efforts towards language and cultural reclamation, and suggestions for affirming intellectual property and data rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The Evolution and Future of Cybersecurity: From Fragmentation to Consolidation
Thursday November 14, 2024 10:35am - 11:05am MST
Over the past three decades, the cybersecurity landscape has evolved dramatically, marked by rapid technological advancements and an increasingly sophisticated threat landscape. However, this growth has also led to a proliferation of fragmented solutions, creating a complex and often disjointed security environment. Organizations are frequently burdened with managing multiple, isolated tools, each addressing different aspects of security. This fragmentation not only increases costs but also complicates threat detection, response efforts, and creates gaps that adversaries can exploit.
This presentation will explore the evolution of cybersecurity, focusing on the challenges posed by fragmented solutions. We will discuss how these silos have hampered comprehensive threat visibility and response, often leading to increased vulnerability and risk. As the industry moves towards a future of integrated security platforms, we will highlight the benefits of consolidation, including streamlined operations, improved threat intelligence, and enhanced organizational resilience. Join us to learn how the future of cybersecurity lies in unifying diverse security functions into cohesive, efficient platforms, ensuring a more robust defense against the ever-evolving cyber threat landscape.
